Urban interior. City and Patios
WorkHome units in Shoreditch, London
By studying the current situation of the Shoreditch neighbourhood in London’s East End, the focus was placed on reading the city planning before embarking on the design proposal. In order to understand how the location of the urban block is connected to the surrounding city, the concept of “trajectory and location” was considered in terms of the location and immediate context of the Shoreditch neighbourhood.
This project showcases open spaces in urban planning, which are not streets or squares but rather part of an urban block that, as part of the urban fabric, proposes a public use.
DESIGN STRATEGY
The master plan offers the city a public space in the inner courtyard of the block, which is surrounded by art workshops and galleries where the entrances can be opened fully to the courtyard. This transforms them into spaces at once interior and public, with access from both the exterior façade of the building and the inner courtyard. The public space is understood as a term related to the buildings, the spaces between them and to the movement through those intermediate and transitional spaces.
WORKHOME. DUALISM BETWEEN HOME AND WORK
The designed housing units are categorised as workhomes. These workhomes are becoming increasingly more popular; correctly distributed and responsibly designed, these units are transformed into sustainable solutions for cities that are positive for the economy as well as an environmentally and family-friendly option.
