Hospital extension in Broomfield, United Kingdom, 50,000 m²

The combination of architecture and interior design addresses the fundamental applications of scale, circulation, function and use of materials. The design provides a clear identity to this new 50,000 sqm building while also maintaining a sense of coherence with the adjacent hospital and its immediate surroundings. It is a space that conveniently connects the outer space with the inner workings of the building in a ratio of interior – exterior space.

The proposed building for the new Broomfield Hospital was designed with an overall clinical function assigned to each of the five floors. Each of these floors has its own diagnostic, emotional and functional impact to consider. The criterion for selecting the colours to use in a medical setting is generally affected by diagnostic, emotional and functional impacts. The shades of colour assigned to the hospital’s circulation strategy serve to define the primary and secondary public areas, thus creating a hierarchy of the hospital’s spaces.
