La casa de las acelgas

Full home renovation in Madrid’s Maravillas neighbourhood, 190 m²

Popularly known as La Casa de las Acelgas (Chard House), this building on the San Bernando roundabout in Madrid’s Maravillas neighbourhood is the venue of this 190 sqm property renovation. The principles were clear: wide, open spaces and respect for materials. The vibrant owner was involved in the design process from beginning to end, and we managed to create a result similar to the entire reform process: an extremely personal project full of vitality, freshness and loads of energy.

It all started with the removal of the partitions and surface layers that prevented us from seeing the reinforced concrete structure and the original materials. We proposed a revival of the ideology and design of Fernando Higueras, the architect who constructed this building of flats in the heart of Madrid in 1975, basing his aesthetic on Le Corbusier and his rationalistic philosophy to design gardens in a vertical structure.

Reinforced concrete, vegetation and lots of light: these were the driving forces that guided the design.
